  • I loved the pictures too,Mira. It seems to have been a really nice event. I have to ask the same question as Rebecca, what do you celebrate at the Cross Festival? Forgive my ignorance and curiousity.

  • The Empress Elena's dying request had been that the faithful to hold a festival annually on May 3rd to remember the day on which the Cross was discovered. The Day of the Holy Cross, was remembered around the world until 1960 when Pope John XXIII removed the celebration from the church calendar, hoping to focus attention on September 14, the Exaltation of the Cross.

  • Good post Mira :) Keep it up!
The Orthodox church, never celebrated a May 3rd festival, and there is no way that a pope would implement anything on the Orthodox church.
This day is to celebrate the time when the Patriach of Jerusalem Makarios, raised the cross high ,after its discovery. And later on, to celebrate the return of the cross after being looted by the Persians.
The church of Jerusalem and Greece, still celebrate on Sept 27, meanwhile other orthodox and non-orthodox churchies celebrate on Sept 14

Now, what is with the fire in the 3rd picture?
Here is the story,Constantine, who went to Jerusalem to look for the Cross. On her way to Jerusalem, she left one of her assistans on a mountain. Once the cross was discovered, she ordered her men to light a fire on top of a nearby mountain. Having seen the fire, the servant staying on the next mountain lit another fire, and in this manner the news of the discovery of the Holy Cross reached the capital, Constantinople.
